This course will allow powerboaters to gain skills in boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation, at both day and night in coastal waters. Some pre course preparation maybe needed depending on your experience.
Participants must hold a National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2). We would recommend having also completed the Intermediate Powerboat Course.
It is strongly recommended that participants hold a VHF radio operators certificate and a first aid certificate. Additionally, participants should be proficient in navigation of at least Irish Sailing's Coastal Navigation for Small Boats Course or the RYA Day-Skipper level.
An assessment at the beginning of the couse may be required at our discretion. This is to ensure that all participants are at an appropriate skill level to absorb new knowledge and skills.
Prior to the course, we ask that you download and print a copy of our powerboat course registration form. If you have any medical conditions, allergies or are undergoing any medical treatment we ask that you fill out a copy of our Medical Declaration Form. There’s no need to get the forms to us prior to the morning of the course, and we have plenty of spares on hand too.
The course starts at 9.30am on the first day. Registration on the first day is completed in a matter of seconds, so please don’t feel under any pressure to get to us early.
We provide Waterproof Clothing, Lifejacket / Buoyancy Aid and all other safety equipment but it is necessary to bring the following:
* Passport style photograph only if you want the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Powerboat Certificate. You do not need to bring one if you wish to have the ISA (Irish Sailing Association) Certificate issued.
Where to Attend…
Our clubhouse is the first building on the West Pier. You can't miss us once you get close; we’re a white building with our name displayed in large lettering. Landmarks close-by include The Purty Kitchen Seafood Restaurant and the West Pier Filling Station.
We are well served by public transport; the nearest DART Station is Salthill & Monkstown. Bus numbers 7, 7A, 45A, 46A, 59, 746, 111, 63 and 75 all serve Dun Laoghaire and are a few minutes’ walk from the clubhouse.
