Powerboat Courses in Malahide

We're delighted to announce the opening of our new Malahide Powerboat Teaching base. Courses are delivered by the Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School – Ireland’s largest and foremost provider of sailing and powerboat training.

Courses are delivered in our fleet of powerboats and all the specialist gear is provided by us. We offer the National Powerboat Certificate, Intermediate Powerboat Certificate and Advanced Powerboat Certificate courses from our Malahide Base – Finding Us – Malahide Directions

Courses at Malahide

National Powerboat Certificate: Ideal for Beginners

This is an excellent course for those looking for a comprehensive and practical step by step guide to all that is powerboating. The course lasts two days and all the crucial aspects of the sport are covered to include:

  • Learning how to Leave and Come Alongside a Dock.
  • Learning the art of picking up a Mooring.
  • Anchoring.
  • Turning in confined spaces / operating in busy marina areas.
  • Recovering a person fallen overboard.
  • Rules of the Road.
  • Launch and Recovery from a Road Trailer.
  • Safety and Planning.
  • Tying up to a dock.
  • All necessary knots to include Round Turn, Reef Knot and Bowline.

Malahide Course Dates:

Courses run on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.30am-5.30pm each day.

  • Course 1: 10th & 11th June
  • Course 2 1st & 2nd July
  • Course 3: 22nd & 23rd July
  • Course 4: 19th & 20th August
  • Course 5: 16th & 17th September
  • Course 6: 14th & 15th October

Course Pre-Requisites…

Minimum age of attendance is 16 years and a level of comfort on the water.

Intermediate Powerboat:

The Intermediate Powerboat Course will teach participants how to safely plan and execute a day passage. This is a perfect course for those who wish to further their navigation and practical powerboating abilities as well as for those who undertake day trips away from their home port.

The course lasts two days and covers;

  • Navigation and Chartwork
  • Courses to Steer
  • Interpreting Tidal Information, including tidal diamonds, tidal streams and tidal curves
  • Use of Electronic Chart Plotter
  • Fixing position by traditional and electronic means
  • Day Pilotage
  • Application of IRPCS
  • Application of SRC VHF Radio
  • Boat Handling in Rougher Weather
  • Techniques for picking up a Man Over Board in various conditions

Malahide Course Dates…

Courses run on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.30am-5.30pm each day.

  • Course 1: 24th & 25th June
  • Course 2: 30th September & 1st October

The course fee is €289 per person.

Course Pre-Requisites…

Participants must hold a National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2) and have at least 8 hours driving experience. It is strongly recommended that participants hold a VHF Radio Operators Certificate, a First Aid Certificate and have completed the Day Skipper Theory/Navigation Course.

Advanced Powerboat:

The ISA Advanced Powerboat Course will allow powerboaters to gain skills in boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation, at both day and night in coastal waters. Some pre course preparation maybe needed depending on your experience. The course lasts two days and covers;

  • Boat Preparation
  • Boat Handling; holding station, coming alongside at speed, lee shore landings
  • Rough weather skills
  • Meteorology; forecast sourcing and interpretation, implications for powerboating
  • Navigation; at day and night using GPS, depth sounder, steering and hand bearing compass
  • Passage Planning
  • International Collision Regulations, day and night shapes
  • Safety, search patterns, sea anchor usage
  • Basic maintenance, trailing and storage

Previous Experience/Knowledge Required…

Participants must hold a National Powerboat Certificate (Level 2) and have at least 8 hours driving experience. It is strongly recommended that participants hold a VHF radio operators certificate and a first aid certificate. Additionally, participants should be proficient in navigation to at least RYA Day-Skipper level.

  • Course 1: 21st & 22nd October (Saturday 11am-11pm, Sunday 11am-6pm)
