Sailing through Irish and Keelboat Training - new for Summer 2017

Every June to August the Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School runs Summer Sailing & Watersports Courses for children aged from 4-6 years. Our programmes have a unique dynamic underpinning their success, we divide children into groups firstly by age, then by sailing experience. This ensures that they always are learning with their own peer group, and facilitates the forming of lifelong friendships.

For Summer 2017, we’re excited to launch two new programmes, one to allow for children to combine watersports instruction and learning Irish, and the second for our older more advanced sailors to get to grips with sailing on keelboats and all the new challenges that go along with this.

Irish Language Programme – Sailing through Irish

This new programme will mix classroom language sessions delivered by an Irish Teacher in the morning and watersports in the afternoon with our team of fluent instructors. The programme is primarily aimed at 11-14 year olds, but we would run programmes for other age groups if we have sufficient interest.

This programme will run on the following weeks:

  • Summer 2 - 12th June to 16th June
  • Summer 3 - 19th June to 23rd June
  • Summer 5 - 3rd July to to 7th July
  • Summer 6 - 10th July to 14th July
  • Summer 7 - 17th July to 21st July
  • Summer 8 - 24th July to 28th July
  • Summer 11 - 14th August to 18th August
  • Summer 12 - 21st August to 25th August

Course fees are the same as our Summer sailing prices, with children in this group counting towards overall discounts. Full details on prices are available here.

Keelboat Programme

Many of our 15+ years group students have successfully mastered the skills involved in Dinghy Sailing and are now ready to move to heavier and more challenging craft. We’ve specifically designed our new keelboat programme to cater for this need, and allow 15+ students to make the next step up the sailing ladder.

Keeping to the successful format of our Summer Sailing Courses the programme will run from Monday to Friday from 9am-5pm, but exclusively on board our fleet of keelboats. Our instructing team will not only impart the skills required to handle a keelboat, but will also provide training on the more advanced theoretical knowledge required to spend time at seas, covering the larger distances that these boats are capable of. The highlight of each week will be a day trip to a destination chosen by the students, with all planning and execution of the voyage done by the students – with our instructors on hand to help out along the way.

Topics covered on each course:

  • Boat Handling Techniques for larger craft
  • Person Over-board Recovery Techniques
  • Anchoring a large keelboat
  • Operating in busy marina areas
  • Seamanship Skills and developing leadership as a skipper
  • Advanced theory including buoyage, International Collision Regulations (IRPCS), meteorology and navigation techniques.
  • Passage planning will also form part of the programme, culminating in students executing their own day trip away from base.

This programme will run on the following weeks of the year, and is anticipated to be very popular so early booking is recommended;

  • Summer 5 - 3rd July to 7th July
  • Summer 6 - 10th July to 14th July
  • Summer 7 - 17th July to 21st July
  • Summer 8 - 24th July to 28th July
  • Summer 9 - 31st July to 4th August
  • Summer 10 - 8th August to 11th August (4 day week)
  • Summer 11 - 14th August to 18th August
  • Summer 12 - 21st August to 25th August

Course fees are the same as our Summer sailing prices, with children in this group counting towards overall discounts. Full details on prices are available here.
