The Irish National Sailing & Powerboat School is delighted to launch our new training programme for aspiring instructors.

Starting this Summer coaching and training for aspiring instructors will incorporate a new formal assistant instructor training module, which will run over the months of June, July and August. In a departure from previous years, attendees of this programme will then be invited to participate in the Dinghy Instructor Training Programme running over the Winter and Spring of 2017/18, with the programme culminating in the attendance on a Dinghy Instructor Course at Easter.

Students from the 15+ years group who are attending our Summer Courses will be recommended by the Section Senior Instructor to join the programme. Pre-requisites include a candidate being at YSS Stage 4, or higher, and being at least 15 years old by the 1st of April. Once recommended, candidates may join the Assistant Instructor in Training Programme.

The new Assistant Instructor in Training Programme will consist of two parts. The first will involve on the job training, where Assistant Instructors will join children’s groups, under the supervision of our experienced Group Head Instructors. The second part will involve specific and tailored coaching over a series of weekly meetings after the courses have concluded. These meetings will take place each Wednesday from June to August (6pm-8pm) and be lead by a dedicated Senior Instructor who will work on developing communication and sailing skills as well as teaching techniques. Trainees will split their time between sailing on courses and assisting on groups. Regardless of what activity they are undertaking, they are invited to the weekly training meetings.

This Senior Instructor will also be responsible for the trainees progress over the course of the Summer and will provide guidance to these individuals and receive reports from the Head Instructors on trainees progress. At the end of the programme, the Senior Instructor will be responsible for recommending an invitation be issued to a trainees to attend the next step, the Instructor Training Modules.

Interested students should speak to the 15+ Years Section Senior Instructor about the programme. This programme is only open to Summer Course attendees as well as 15+ years sailors from the Junior Club. Candidates will not be invited to assist every week, as it is important that they practise there sailing skills as well as undertake on the job training.
