Who does the Irish National Sailing School cater for?

The INSS runs Adult Sailing Courses, Powerboat Courses and Shorebased Courses from beginner level right up to advanced level. Since 1972 we have provided our services, and as a consequence can rely on a wealth of experience in sail and motor training.

What is the age profile of INSS adult course students?

Generally our age profile is the 25-65 years age bracket.

Can I bring my kids along?

The INSS adult courses caters for adults only. We have a separate programme for children.

What gear do I need to bring?

For water based courses it is important to bring the following:

  • Plenty of warm layers.
  • Wooly hat & scarf.
  • Spare change of clothes.
  • Towel, shampoo & Shower gear.
  • Old runners to wear in boat.
  • Packed Lunch

INSS provides all wetsuits, lifejackets, waterproof gear and safety equipment.

What is the best way to book onto a course?

Quick and easy, we have an online booking facility at the bottom of each course page. Alternatively, you can book over the telephone to 01 2844195. All credit and debit cards accepted.

I’m thinking about giving an INSS Gift Voucher as a present – what way does the Gift Voucher system work?

Gift Vouchers are available for all our courses. The great thing about the Voucher is that it gives the recipient the option on the type of course they’d like to take (Yacht Sailing, Dinghy Sailing, Powerboat Training) and secondly they can pick the course date that suits them best. Gift Vouchers will be posted to the person who purchases the voucher so they can give it to the lucky recipient on the special day. Phenomenally popular, get yours now by calling us at 01 2844195!

I haven’t sailed in years and am looking to get back into the sport. I’m not sure what level I’m at. What course should I enrol on?

Generally, your best port-of-call is to start back at the very beginning. Yes, you will certainly remember some parts of the course but it is much better to get the foundations right before progressing up the sailing ladder. However, we recommend you call our team on 01 2844195 who will be able to advise you on your specific requirements.

I’ve never sailed before and am planning to enrol onto the course on my own. Is this common or do students generally enrol in groups?

Up to 70% of those attending our courses do so on their own! In essence our courses are a great way to learn a new skill, have a great experience and make new friends to boot!

I have my own boat and would like some private tuition. Can this be arranged?

No problem. Call us at 01 2844195 and we can set up a date that suits!

As you are a children’s sailing organisation won’t I be sailing with children?

The Irish National Sailing School has a dedicated Adult Sail Training facility. Children’s courses are run separately and outside the hours of Adult Sail Training Courses, so there is never an overlap.

Are Lifejackets mandatory?

Absolutely. Completely and utterly mandatory at all times on the water, as prescribed by Irish Law.

Do I need to buy anything in advance of the course?

Absolutely not! We provide absolutely everything that you’ll need sailing-wise. Other than to buy your place on your chosen course, you don’t need to invest in anything. For items you’ll need to bring along see the “gear to bring” above in the FAQ section.

What does the course fee include?

The course fee includes instruction, provision of instruction and boat, wetsuit, waterproofs, lifejacket, course notes, use of facilities and insurance. See above list of gear to bring for your end of the bargain!

Should I bring lunch?

Absolutely. The lunch break lasts 30 minutes so a sandwich and piece of fruit is advisable. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate is available for free in the Clubhouse.

Is parking available?
Parking is available on Dun Laoghaire pier at €2 per hour between the hours 8am-8pm, 7 days per week. Clamping is in force. However a rate of €3.60 per day (9am-7pm) is available in the County Council Car Parks at the rear of our Clubhouse, beside the Dart line or alternatively at the back of the West Pier at Salthill & Monkstown Dart Station. Parking is free in the county council car parks at the weekends and after 7pm Monday to Friday.

If the weather is bad on the course date what happens?

In the event that weather is not condusive to sail training we will reschedule the lost time to a date that suits you. A rescheduled sailing session should not be confused with a cancelled session. Please note that refunds are not available unless a course is cancelled.

How soon should I book in advance of my chosen course?

It is advisable to enrol as much in advance of your course as possible. Our season is only 7 months long and places are allotted on a first come, first served basis.

Is it possible to provisionally book a place?

We regret that this is not possible. Places can only be booked when the course fee is tendered.

Am I bound by the INSS Terms and Conditions?

By booking onto an INSS course you are implicitly subscribing to our Terms and Conditions. Please ensure to read these as you are deemed to be on constructive notice of these.

Is the INSS regulated by any bodies?

The Irish National Sailing School is validated by The Irish Sailing Association (domestic sailing governing body) and The Royal Yachting Association (UK and Commonwealth governing body). We are inspected annually by both bodies who inspect our facilities, equipment and staff. In this way you are assured of the best possible programme.

What are the qualifications of INSS instructors?
