Second Level / TY Programmes
The Irish National Sailing School has been running Secondary School Sailing Programmes for in excess of fifteen years. Generally a school will integrate one sailing lesson into the timetable per week over a course of up to ten weeks. This system has proven extremely popular with the Transition Year syllabus as taking a course in sailing can be used towards the student achieving The Gaisce Presidents Award. The sport of sailing fosters the ethic of teamwork, encourages personal development and develops leadership skills. Self motivation is key to attaining the Level 1 Sailing Certificate. A student’s performance is graded each lesson he / she attends – the results of which are forwarded on to teachers on completion of the course. The continuous assessment element gives both us and the school an insight into the student’s application over the duration of their time with us.
At present we have over twenty five schools integrating our sailing programme into their syllabus, including:
What do Teachers think?
“Marian College students have been attending Transition Year Sailing Programmes at The Irish National Sailing School for over ten years. Of all the activities undertaken in Transition Year we consider the sailing programme to be the flagship activity and from the outset students have consistently voted the sailing course as their favourite activity in Transition Year. It is not hard to understand why - facilities at the I.N.S.S. are first class!! The school is conveniently located beside Salthill & Monkstown Dart station and boasts a team of instructors who are friendly, approachable, helpful and, above all, very experienced. It is without hesitation that I endorse The Irish National Sailing School and we look forward to continuing our long standing association with them for years to come”.

“Transition Year students from Oatlands College having been attending sailing courses at the INSS for 17 years. Students receive a wonderful experience of water sport and they learn valuable team skills at the same time. In a beautiful location with great facilities, this is an experience students will remember forever”.

The Syllabus Students undertake The Level 1 syllabus of The Irish Sailing Association and Royal Yachting Association. Intense but fun, the course combines all the basics into one package. By the end of the course students will be proficient in rigging the boat, launching into the sea, coming back, turning the boat around, sailing upwind, downwind and 90° to the wind. Students will also learn how to ‘right’ the boat from the capsized position.
