Primary Schools Programmes

Following the success of the Irish Sailors in the Olympics, especially Annalise Murphy we have been inundated with calls from schools interested in water activities especially sailing.

The Irish National Sailing School (INSS) has been providing sailing courses for children for over 40 years. Based in Dun Laoghaire, it is are ideally located beside main Bus and Dart services.

The INSS is in correspondence with Discover Primary Science and Maths, Science Foundation Ireland to become a Discovery Centre. We have sent them a sample of the work we do with our 4 to 7 age group and hope to be included on their lists in the near future. We experiment with floating/sinking, the force of the wind, sea, waves, their impact on the seashore and many other science related topics.

4 – 7 year oldsPirate Boat

Enjoy a new educational and exciting tour for the Junior Cycle. Rock pooling on Salthill beach explores the habitat and life of the mussel, limpet, barnacle, crab and other marine life creatures which are washed up by the tide on a daily basis. Rocks

This is followed by an art and craft session. But the highlight of the day is the boat trip in Dun Laoghaire Harbour. We see the seals, jellyfish, limpets, barnacles and seaweed living and growing in their natural habitats. Our specially designed launch boat with a pirate flag make it an adventure children thoroughly enjoy.

8 – 12 year olds

For the senior end of primary school we offer sailing, kayaking or paddle boarding depending on the children’s age and abilities. Our state of the art ‘Oppie’ dinghies are designed for young children and provide an excellent vehicleIMG 0030.JPG for getting started in the sport. We can deliver two or three hour packages, depending on preference. We provide all necessary safety and waterproof gear for students. The tour can be tailor made to suit the needs of the school.

Testimonial.....

"I took my 3rd Class (including two children with special needs) to the INSS for their school tour. They had a fantastic day; sailing and kayaking, and children of all abilities were catered for. They even saw some seals close up! They say it was the best school tour ever and so do I!"
