We are delighted to offer Instructor Training Programmes.
RYA Dinghy Instructor
The course is five days of intensive but enjoyable training in all aspects of teaching beginners and improvers to sail, including moderation by another coach on the final day. Our Coaches, brought in from the UK will provide you with the RYA Dinghy Instructor resource pack and make sure you pick up top tips, new ideas and show you our well-developed operation routines, equipment maintenance and storage systems.
Please ensure to have read a copy of the following RYA Publications in advance of your course:
- Dinghy Coaching Manual (G14)
- National Sailing Scheme (G4)
- Youth Sailing Scheme Logbook (G11)
All publications are available for purchase from INSS.
Pre-requisites for Dinghy Instructor Course:
- RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate
- First Aid Certificate (from recognised provider)
- VHF Radio Operator’s Certificate
- Have Passed Pre-Entry assessment (see below for dates)
- Minimum age 16 Years
- Membership of RYA
- Student is aware of basic navigation

RYA Pre-Entry Assessment for Dinghy Instructor Course
This is a one-day assessment to determine whether a candidate is of the sailing standard to take the RYA Dinghy Instructor Course. Candidates should have completed ISA / RYA Level 3 and be well-honed and able to demonstrate the following manoeuvres:
- Coming alongsides: Upwind and downwind
- Sailing a Tight Circle
- Picking up a mooring: Upwind and Downwind
- Sailing a Triangular Course using The 5 Essentials and rounding marks effectively.
- Use the boat’s equipment to best advantage
- Lee Shore & Windward Shore Landings
- MOB Recovery
- Follow the Leader
Upon successful completion of the Pre-Entry Course students are eligible to take the RYA Dinghy Instructor course.

Take the one-day direct assessment at The Irish National Sailing School! A great qualification to have if you are planning to travel abroad to teach sailing. Provided you can demonstrate all the manoeuvres and teaching ability of an RYA Instructor we’ll get you signed off in a day!
